Easy Homemade Christmas Decorations

The holidays are everyone’s favorite time of the year, and the perfect time to get crafty! But Christmas decorations can get expensive, so why not make your own? Homemade Christmas decorations are not only a fun activity to do with the kids, but they make your home look cheerful for the season. • Easy Christmas Ornaments: Homemade Christmas ornaments are a great way to decorate your tree and make memories that will last for years to come! You can make recycled Christmas decorations easily by painting old, plain plastic ornaments with acrylic paint. Give the kids different colors to get creative with for a fun keepsake craft, or stick to colors like silver, gold, white, red, and green for a sophisticated, classic look. Dipping the wet paint into glitter also makes a funky effect. Tip: Once your glitter ornament has dried, spray it with a clear lacquer or paint it with clear nail polish to avoid losing glitter every time you handle the ornament.

• Candy Canes: Put this easy craft on your list of Christmas decorations to make! Candy Canes always seem to get eaten, leaving your tree bare. Make some permanent candy canes by twisting together red and white pipe cleaners and bending it into the shape of a candy cane. You can form it into other shapes like stars and circles to put on the tree too!

• Snow Globes & Snow Scenes: Everybody loves snow globes, so why not make you own? These easy Christmas decorations double as great homemade gifts for kids’ teachers or friends. To make, simply take a clear glass jar, and glue small trinkets or figurines to the inside of the lid (small, old ornaments work great for this). Once that has dried, paint the inside of the lid white, like snow. Fill the jar with water and add glitter to your liking. Coat the top of the jar with waterproof epoxy, so when you screw the lid on, it is secure and waterproof. Let the glue dry completely before turning the jar upside down to view your snow globe! For another Christmas decoration idea, paint a Christmas ornament with glue and cover with glitter. Set aside to dry. Take an empty jar and layer the bottom with white glitter or torn-up cotton balls. Add your ornament and a sprig of holly or evergreen. Seal the jar shut and top with a candle for an adorable snow scene.

• Crystal Snowflakes: This fun Christmas craft looks great hanging in a window to reflect the light or on the tree as an ornament! To make, simply bend white pipe cleaner into the shape of a snowflake by twisting them together in the middle. Tie a string to one pipe cleaner and the other end to a pencil, so when the pencil is placed on a jar, the snowflake will hang in the jar. Fill a quart sized jar with boiling water and spoon about 4 tablespoons of borax into it. Once the borax is dissolved, place the pencil across the top of the jar and submerge the snowflake in the water. Leave it overnight and crystals will form on the pipe cleaners! For a fun variation on these easy Christmas decorations, try putting food coloring in the water to get colored crystals!
