How to Make a Holiday Trifle

Christmas trifles are the perfect dessert to serve at a large Christmas or holiday gathering you’re hosting—they serve a large crowd and look sophisticated and elegant. Trifles are also fabulous because you can personalize them by adding favorite flavors into the trifle such as different types of fruits, nuts, or toppings.

Ingredients and equipment:

  • Three 8-9 inch white cakes
  • A large trifle bowl (or a large glass bowl)
  • 3-4 cups vanilla pudding (can be store-bought)
  • 2 pints fresh strawberries
  • 1 pint fresh blueberries
  • 2 bananas
  • 3 kiwis
  • 1 cup whipped cream or whipped topping
  • 1/4 cup blanched, slivered almonds or pecans
  • 12 maraschino cherries

Directions:

Slice your strawberries, bananas, and kiwis into thin slices for easy layering. Cut the white cake into 1-2 inch cubes (angel food or pound cakes work well). Start with a layer of white cake, then put a layer of the vanilla pudding. Next, layer some fruit and nuts. Repeat this process until the trifle is almost filled to the top. For the final layer, spread whipped cream or whipped topping to cover. Garnish the top with cherries and any leftover fruit and nuts. Make sure to keep the trifle refrigerated until ready to serve.
