Gingerbread Haunted House Craft

Create haunted gingerbread houses with kits from your local party store, or roll up your sleeves and make them from scratch. Decorate the gingerbread houses with a haunted theme for Halloween, incorporating ghosts, spiders, or a graveyard setting.

Enjoy this Halloween baking and craft activity with the whole family! Kids will love being helpers and decorating these spooky themes:

  • Halloween Theme: Decorate the gingerbread haunted houses with candy corn and other brown, yellow, and orange candies such as M&Ms, jelly beans, Reese’s pieces, and peanut butter cups. Use orange, brown, and yellow frosting for additional decorations. Put yellow and brown sprinkles over the frosting.

  • Ghost Theme: Gingerbread haunted houses with a ghost theme are a great addition to your Halloween decorations . Purchase Peep marshmallow treats in ghost shapes. Frost the area behind the ghosts in a dark colored frosting for a dramatic contrast. Place the ghosts on the roof, on the sides of the gingerbread house, and in the yard.
  • Spider Theme: Gingerbread houses with a spider theme are creepy crawly fun. Place spider gummy candy in the yard and on the roof of the house. You can also use black string licorice to create your edible arachnids. Roll the string licorice into a circle for the body of the spider. Place pieces of licorice on both sides for the spider legs. Use a combination of white cotton candy and white frosting to create spider webs. Dare to be extra creative? Transform the entire gingerbread house into one big spider. Frost the house black, make red eyes with frosting, and stick black string licorice out from the sides for the legs.
  • Graveyard Theme: Turn your gingerbread haunted houses into a scary graveyard theme. Construct the gingerbread into a church and add gravestones in the yard. Decorate with sugar gravestones from your local party store and crushed Oreo cookies for dirt.
Gingerbread haunted houses make “spooktacular” Halloween centerpieces. Place them in your front windows on Halloween night to delight the trick-or-treaters. Don’t forget to take the Halloween gingerbread houses apart, and eat the remains!
